BANNOCKBURN REFOUGHT
Scots soldiers not content with simply fighting a real war in Afghanistan in 1879. They organised a massive snowball fight at their camp on the outskirts of Kabul, which they billed as a second Bannockburn. Around 2,000 Scots, mainly from the 92nd Gordon Highlanders and the 72nd Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders, lined up against an equal number of their English and Irish counterparts. The Scots, commanded by a Major from the Gordons, won. Just over 600 years after the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn secured Scottish independence from England, least temporarily, Scottish soldiers returned to the old battlefield to prepare for a more modern war. The 4th Battalion of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers were among several battalions of the 52nd Lowland Division which used the old battlefield as a training ground when they were stationed near Stirling before sailing for Gallipoli in 1915.
